National Adoption Week – 14-18th October

10th October 2019

It’s National Adoption Week during October 14th-20th and so the hunt is on to find more loving parents for the children that need them.

Thousands more adoptive families are being urged to come forward during National Adoption Week in an effort to provide homes for children in the Norfolk area.

Andrew Christie, Chair of the Adoption and Special Guardianship Leadership Board said:
“Finding families for some of the most vulnerable children in our country is at the heart of this year’s National Adoption Week campaign.

I urge anyone who has been thinking about adoption to reach out to an adoption agency and talk about what it might mean for you. Please don’t rule yourself out because there is something about you or your family’s circumstances that you think would make you unsuitable – all sorts of people make great adopters!

To those that have adopted a child from care, I want to thank you personally for the commitment and love you bring to parenting some of our most vulnerable children.

And, if you know someone that has adopted or someone that is considering adoption, please give them your support.”

Activities in Norfolk will aim to increase diversity in the backgrounds and ethnicities of those coming forward to adopt the children that are ready and waiting for a loving family. The latest data shows that 24% of current children waiting for adoption are a from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, so the recruitment drive will have a particular focus on finding families for these children, as well as other harder to place groups, including siblings and older children.

To be eligible to adopt, individuals must be aged 21 or over (there is no upper age limit).

People who adopt a child can be:

• Single, married or unmarried
• From any ethnic or religious background
• Heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender
• A homeowner or living in rented accommodation
• Employed or on benefits
• Those who have children or who have none
• People thinking of adopting for a second time
